It's also the premiere of this trainwreck:
I have escaped from behind the fabled Pine Curtain of northeast Texas. I have learned much. Here is my tale...

"Sunny day, everything's A-OK..."
The Geej is at the Elmo stage. Which is fine. She only has one Elmo item, and it lives at her grandmother's house because it talks, and I don't likes no noisy toys. Anyway, I started TiFaux-ing Sesame Street every day a while back, and as part of our end-of-day wind down, I fast forward past most of the rest of the show to get to "Elmo's World," which is always in the last 20 or so minutes. She hasn't really shown much interest in the rest of the show until last week.
Last week's shows featured a running storyline of the street's Veterinarian, Gina, going off to Guatemala to adopt a 10 mo. old baby named Marco. Gina's single, like me, and all of Gina's friends on Sesame Street were super excited about this whole event. I'd be fast-forwarding past anything having to do with the baby in order to get us to "Elmo's World", and The Geej would protest, "I wanna watch this. I wanna see the baby!" So we did. And I've got to hand it to Sesame Street--they did a nice job of handling this. I found myself getting all weepy and shit during one of the segments. They also showed some videos throughout the week that featured "non-traditional" families--mixed race, same-sex parents, single parents, grandparents as parents, etc. I'm sure it's stuff like this that gets the right wingers out there all up in arms and has them wanting to yank CPB funding for this show. However, as someone who is in a non-traditional family by choice, I applaud them showing families of all stripes.
Then, as if that weren't enough, on Friday's "Elmo's World," Elmo was thinking about babies. It was all babies, all the time. I don't think The Geej will ever allow me to erase this episode.

Seriously random.
Hooray! I got the latest "My Twinn" catalogue in the mail today. I'd been waiting for it for months!! Not really, of course. Those dolls creep me out. But it's totally something my mom would get for The Geej. I'm going to have to destroy this catalogue before she comes for another visit.
The Geej's daycare had their annual fundraiser Garage Sale today, and the deal was that, as a parent, you were obligated to either work a 3-hour shift or contribute $50 to the kitty. (Because the $795 a month I'm paying isn't enough, apparently.) On the sign up sheet, it asked "Will you need child care?" and of course I put, "Yes." Well, we show up for my 10am shift and, guess what, no child care. Apparently there wasn't enough interest (I'm the only single parent at this daycare), so they didn't have any. So I had to write them a check for $50 and leave. It would've been nice if they'd thought to tell me (and anyone else who'd put "yes" on the sign up sheet) YESTERDAY that they weren't going to provide child care. I detest shoddy communication and having my time wasted. Grrr...
Speaking of money, I got my long distance bill yesterday, and discovered that a 36 minute call I made to the Texpatriate in Norway cost me ninety fucking dollars. I knew it was going to be expensive, but $90?! I love you Texpatriate, but it's e-mail from now on.
I'm officially sick of summer. I hate August. And unfortunately, September usually isn't any less brutal, so I predict a 90% chance of a very cranky month ahead.
The Geej is really trying to walk, and it's sad because she really sucks at it. Did I say "sad?" I meant hilarious. She gets so excited when she stands up on her own, and then she tries to walk and--BAM--she's on her ass. The most steps she's managed to string together thus far is 3. But every great journey begins with...yadda yadda.

She's also turned into the kissing bandit. If it's not moving, she kisses it. Diapers (clean, of course), the sink, her classmates who can't crawl yet, and my poor old cat Ellen have all been recent victims of attacks by the kissing bandit. Her kisses are very exaggerated and accompanied by a big "myUH!" smacking noise. Pretty funny.
Did you watch the series finale of "Six Feet Under?" I was a big SFU fan, but am glad they ended the series before it seriously started to suck. In the last episode, the scene with Ruth and Brenda on the stairs made me weep. Some of the best writing/acting I've seen in a while. So subtle; so real. And I am totally obsessed with the song they played at the end as they did the flash forward to all the deaths while Claire drove across the desert. It's called "Breathe Me" and it's by a woman named Sia who has also sung with Zero 7 (who I love). I went to iTunes to download it and it was only available if you downloaded the ENTIRE SFU album, which I didn't want. But luckily, I have a friend who had an Astralwerks sampler with the song on it, and she e-mailed it to me. Fuck yeah. I love the Internet. So I've listened to it about 100 times now, and it never fails to make me misty. Good song.
What else...My house is disgusting. Now that I've been back at work for 3+ weeks, things have gotten really nasty around here. I simply have NO time to clean anything. And the time I do have to do it--between about 8:30 and 10:30 at night; after Geej goes to sleep and before I do--I'm always doing other things, like showering, laundry, paying bills, washing dishes, getting her food ready for school the next day, reading mail, etc. I came home from work at lunch time on Wednesday just so I could change the crib sheets, vaccuum, and get some stuff out of the garage for the daycare's garage sale--all things that would've been difficult or impossible to do with the baby in tow. My life is a study in drudgery.
Got to run. I think the baby picked up some cat litter off the nasty ass floor and is eating it.

Make room for baby.
I finally got word last Friday that my adoption agency got my "Federal Database Release Letter" which basically means that I'll be getting a court date set in Vladivostok very soon. And finally, FINALLY, I'll get to go see my amazing baby again and bring her home. Thank God things are starting to move. In case you couldn't tell (yeah, right), I've been wallowing in major depression for the past month or so. This news has provided me with the first positive news on the adoption front in 10 weeks. What a relief.
This past weekend I spent time (and a LOT of money) getting stuff to finish out the nursery and to really prepare for her arrival...diapers, baby food, formula, cereal, baby wipes, a changing pad, umbrella stroller, etc. It's all finished, and now I just have to build the high chair which is actually going to be quite a chore, it appears. I'm not all that great with assembling stuff that requires more than like three steps--and this thing has like a 20 page assembly instruction book with it--so wish me luck.
This week is going to be crazy at work. We've got the opening of our new big-ass flagship store that's been 2 1/2 years in the making. It's amazing. I've got a lot of work to do before and during the opening itself--before and after hours. And I've got a DATE to the big gala tomorrow night. More on that later...
After I got the crib up in the nursery, Earl wouldn't go near the room. He'd sit out in the hall, a good 8 feet away, staring at the door to the room wide-eyed and freaked out. Of course it didn't phase Ellen one bit. Last night, I was watching The Oscars, and during a commercial break I went looking for him. And yes, he was snoozing in the baby bed. I'd say he's made his peace with this new piece of furniture.
Speaking of The Oscars, I love Chris Rock, but he may have been the worst host the Oscars have ever had. And that's saying something. Obnoxious and crass, his style just didn't mesh with the event. And I still haven't decided who my "best dressed" was...maybe Halle Berry...maybe Virginia Madsen. But NOT Barbra Streisand. If I see one more off the shoulder blousy a-line caftan on that woman, I may scream.
