Thanks!!

Hey y'all! You gave me some good advice for the whole gift pickle I was in with the boys. I ended up getting F (the younger one) some drawing supplies (he's an excellent artist), a book on cartooning, some magic trick things, and a gift certificate to the Vans store so he can get some new skateboarding shoes (his are currently held together with duct tape).

For J, the older one, I got a Vans gift certificate as well, and that's it. I feel terrible, but I'd rather NOT get him something than get him something he hates. Maybe I'll give him some cash too. Lame? Yes. But what 14 year old doesn't like moolah, right?

I swore I wasn't going to get my babydoll junkie any more babydolls, but then this walked into my cube at work today:

Her name is Jayden, and she's one of The EarthFriends. Her skin is made of hemp, and her stuffing is made out of recycled plastic bottles. Plus, she's radically unlike any of The Geej's current stable of babies. How could I say no?! And best of all? She's like a $90 doll for FREAKIN' FREE!! Thank you, Santa Claus!!

So now I'm about to pack up, head to Whole Foods to brave the crowds and do my shopping for tomorrow, then head home. Once home I have a list of things to do that's 5 miles long, and most of it involves cleaning, tidying, and then cleaning some more.

Tomorrow, I'm working 1/2 day (from home, thank goodness) then cooking up a storm. My mom's providing the smoked toikey and dressing (her's is--bar none--my favorite), and I'm doing everything else, including creating a breakfast casserole for the following morning. Tomorrow afternoon, the Geej and Dah arrive. I miss that little monkey!! I bet she's going to be wound up like a top since it will be Christmas eve. Luckily, we've got plenty of egg nog and wine (for the grown-ups, natch).

If I don't get a chance to blog again before Santa's arrival, I hope you ALL have a very safe and stress-free holiday--especially those of you who are travelling to be with friends and family.

Oh yeah...there was supposed to be a "part 2" to that previous post.

Sorry.

Okay, so where was I. Toronto. Oh yeah...

So after our adventure up to the tippy top of the CN Tower, we hopped back on the subway and made our way up to what was supposed to be an awesome H&M. I was so psyched about this little journey to clothing nirvana that I'd literally brought a suitcase that was 3 times larger than what I needed so that I could carry all my loot back with me. But we got there, and...meh. Wasn't really loving the spring stuff, and although the coats/jackets were awesome, I couldn't really convince myself to shell out $69 (Canadian) for something that I wouldn't be able to enjoy for at least another 10 mos. And also? The prices weren't as "reasonable" as I remember them being in past H&M shopping experiences. And they're doing that thing that The Gap did a few years ago when they decided to make all their size 10 thru 14 sizes fit like size 6 thru 10 sizes. So H&M? Before you decide to conquer America? You'd better figure shit out so you don't end up in the crap heap like The Gap.

After the disappointing trip to H&M, we went back to the hotel to refresh and try and figure out what we wanted to do for dinner. Toronto is an AMAZING city for all types of ethnic cuisine: Greek, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, etc., so we wanted to try out something that would be memorable. We went to China Town and were not disappointed. I wish I could remember the name of the place we went to (Jaye? Help me?), but it had been recommended to us, and suffice it to say, we were the only Anglos in the joint. We ordered the best salt and pepper shrimp I've ever had, some AWESOME Chinese broccoli in garlic sauce, and this great sliced chicken with ginger and green onion. Accompanied by a couple of Tsing Taos and the unbelievably cute 5 month old Asian baby sitting next to us, it was a fine experience.

Of course, when you're in Chinatown, you have to endure scenes like this, but hey...when in Rome.

Next day, woke up and it was cloudy, colder, and looking like it would snow at any moment. After an early morning pre-presentation work session in my hotel room, Jaye and I headed north, back to the H&M so I could return 3/4 of the stuff that I'd purchased but failed to try on the day before, then we headed to the area where we were going to be doing our presentation, near the University of Toronto.

It was lunch time, so we looked for a place to grab a quick bite. A block away from the university building we were presenting in, we found Bar Mercurio. Wow. What a pleasant surprise THAT was. They had counter service (order at the counter, you're served at the table...but apparently at night they have table service), but this lovely and bustling eatery is what Enoteca in Austin is trying to be. Tons of character, great food, and (what Enoteca and Cippolina lack), utterly authentic. I had a smoked salmon/portabella/goat cheese pizza and Jaye had this mixed seafood linguine. They were both wonderful and hearty.

We scooted to our presentation space and did our thing. During the presentation, it started snowing outside. Lightly at first, then like crazy. By the time we wrapped it up, the locals were telling us to haul ass so we would be able to catch our 6pm flight (it was 3pm). So we hopped on the subway (the wrong line, which we figured out and corrected within one stop), went back to the hotel where our luggage was waiting, and hopped in a car we'd reserved for our trip to the airport.

Now, it was REALLY snowing. Hard. Big, wet snow. Traffic was screwed. We got to the airport after about 1.25 hour in the car. Found out our flight was delayed. Breezed through customs, and finally boarded our plane close to 7pm, EST. Got to Atlanta and found out our flight to Austin was delayed by about an hour. Had dinner in a "Chili's for Desperate Air Travelers" restaurant, and boarded the plane. Jaye watched her Battlestar Gallactica DVD while I tried desperately to get some shut eye. But of course there was this DRUNK chick who thought she was way cuter than she actually was, walking the aisle, and loudly hitting on anything that had a penis. I swear, I was about to CLOCK her. But it was kind of worth the pain when she walked off, and we got to watch the guys near us make fun of her and talk about how bad her breath smelled.

Got back to Austin and had to wait an unusually long time for our luggage. Dropped Jaye off and rolled into my garage at like 12:40am. Took a shower and collapsed in bed at about 1:20. Woke the next day to muggy temperatures that eventually hit the mid-80s.

Wild.

Toronto: Great city. Deserves more than a 36 hour visit.

Me: Thrown back in to work. Sort of zombie-like. Future stepson and in-laws visiting this weekend. Heading back out of town on Tuesday.

But you know what? My puny azalea bush--that has NEVER done anything that produce more than a couple of pitiful blooms in the previous 2 springs that I've lived in this house--is exploding with blooms. If you grow up behind the Pine Curtain, spring to you means blooming dogwoods and azaleas--two things that aren't really found here in Central Texas. So having this little slice of east Texas right outside my front door is a really nice treat.

One of my proudest moments as a mom:

This past Saturday, Geej and I were shopping at a very-crowded Whole Foods. When we were going down the frozen aisle, she asked, "Can we have some poppin' peas?" (That's what she calls edamame, which she loves, by the way.) I told her we already had some at home. She then said, "Can we have some Brussels sprouts?" I told her, again, that we already had some at home. To which she replied, "No we don't! We need Brussels sprouts! We need Brussels sprouts! WE NEED BRUSSELS SPROUTS!" The chanting continued for about 2 minutes. Long enough for several moms to glance enviously my way.

That's my girl!!

A bit of advice from The Geej:

When your mom comes home from a trip to a city where there's an H&M, and she's sort of gone nuts buying you cute new clothes there because her entire state doesn't even have an H&M, the best thing to do is to try everything on at once. Even if that means you're wearing a skirt, two dresses, a rain slicker and matching hat, and two pairs of new day-of-the-week panties on top of the panties you were already wearing.
Trust me: It's a good look.
Love,
The Geej

Proof I done lost my damn mind.

In order to prepare to shower, I must have help. My mother has been helping me wrap my upper arm in Glad press-and-seal wrap topped off by medical tape. This is to protect my PICC line from getting too wet and causing its bearings to come loose. I also try (in vain) to protect my abdominal drain from water as well, but it's such a lost cause that I've pretty much said "fuck it" to that whole ordeal. I have to wear this weird velcro belt thing around my middle, to which the collection bulb from this drain (or whatever the hell it's called) attaches. That way it doesn't have to attach to my clothes and also, I don't have to worry about holding the damn thing while I shower. (Mind you, I didn't get this belt thing until I'd had the drain for about a week, so showering prior to, while holding that damn bulb thing in one hand while wrangling my wrapped up PICC line arm on the other side was a real treat). So after all this prep work, I guess it's not too weird that I got into the shower tonight with my bra on. And I just showered away, washing and rinsing my hair, before I even noticed I was wearing it. Can you say, "Out of it?"

Also, despite the fact that I'm on unpaid medical leave from work and I'm sure I'm about to have a gagillion medical/hospital bills start filling my mailbox, today I went out and bought this:
See, here's the deal: I was at this jeweler a couple of months ago for something totally different (I bought a $50 pair of earrings), and I saw this ring. I tried it on and fell in love. It's a blue topaz surrounded by diamonds set in white gold. Man, it's pretty. Anyway, I resisted temptation and didn't buy it, but I kept thinking about it. After I got my promotion, I thought, "Hell, I deserve that ring. I'm going to go see if it's still there, and if it is, I'm getting it." But I never went by there. Well, when I got home from the hospital/P.O.W. camp, I had a "customer loyalty" $50 off offer from the jeweler waiting for me in my big ol' stack of mail. (I'm a damn sucker for coupons, by the way.) Once again I said to myself, "I'm going to go there, and if that ring is still there, I'm getting it." So I did. I guess it'll be the first thing I pawn when I can't make the mortgage...

A moment of great personal achievement.

I would like to pause and congratulate myself on doing something I've attempted but never been successful at before this weekend:

I, Karla May, went into Super Target without a list, and managed to get out of there spending less than $30.00.

It's not exactly climbing Everest, but it's almost as difficult to accomplish.
